The Greater Citadel
After World War I, again the barracks were overcrowded. The college needed to grow. A plan called "The Greater Citadel" resulted in the college growing several times larger than the original college established in 1842.
In 1918, the city of Charleston and the South Carolina Legislature approved the building of a new campus located only 3 miles from the "old Citadel." The new campus, located on the banks of the historic Ashley River, allowed the college to expand to its maximum size. The "old Citadel," once located at the city boundary during the antebellum era, was now in the middle of downtown and expansion was not possible. The City of Charleston donated 200 acres of pristine property on the banks of the Ashley River. New construction started in 1920 and continued for over 20 years. The class of 1922 was the last to graduate from the "old Citadel."
The college began operations at the new campus in the fall of 1922. The college suffered during the Great Depression and construction slowed but continued under the leadership of General Charles P. Summerall, President of The Citadel. During the visit of the President in October 1935, Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "When I heard that I was to speak at The Citadel, old memories came back to me, memories not only of my own visit to the old school, but memories also of the great historic tradition of that school, a historical record, a war record, if you please, of The Citadel boys that ought to be known to every boy in the U.S." President Roosevelt's speech highlighted The Citadel's "war record" of excellence.
During the Great Depression, graduates continued to branch out and serve in Texas. Among them were several in the military, business, and educators, to include the President of the Texas Military College, Bernard B. Abrams, class of 1935 and William G. Martin, class of 1901, Dean and Commandant of Cadets of Schriener Institute (now Schriener University) in Kerrville, Texas.
