Societal Change

Female Citadel CadetBy the mid 1990s, a law suit against the all-male military college brought about change. The first four women were admitted and the first female graduate, Nancy R. Mace, received her diploma in 1999. The first female graduate to serve in the armed forces was Second Lieutenant Petra Lovetinska, class of 2000, who was commissioned in the U. S. Marine Corps upon graduation. She was the second woman graduate and rose to the position of Cadet Regimental Executive Officer, Deputy Cadet Commander, of the Cadet Corps. Capt Lovetinska, USMC, was also the first female graduate to serve in combat during the Global War on Terror. As of June 2006, over 100 women have graduated from The Citadel, including one right here in San Antonio, TX and she is a member of The Alamo Battalion and a graduate from the class of 2003. Women from all ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds have graduated from The Citadel and have left a legacy of excellence for the college.
